The Halloween Messenger — Episode 1: The Blacksmith and the Cold Iron
Night falls thick over the old forge at the edge of the wood, a block of stone and soot isolated from the rest of the world.
The fire in the brazier is nothing more than a heap of gray ash, dead for hours.
Cold as the resentment tightening in the throat.
The blacksmith sits on the wooden bench. His massive, calloused hands weigh heavily on his knees, worn out by a lifetime spent forging for others.
He gave warmth, strength, and form to those who, in the end, could not even afford him respect.
The air smells of oxidized iron and solitude.
Then something changes.
A chill runs down his spine.
It is not the wind.
The temperature drops suddenly, freezing the sweat on his skin.
The ajar door opens an inch.
No squeak.
A black shadow slips inside.
The cat.
It advances without making the gravel crunch, crosses the floor, and stops beside the dead forge.
It remains motionless.
Then it places a paw on the piece of raw iron left unfinished on the workbench.
The blacksmith looks at it.
For an instant, it seems to him that he sees, in the dull surface of the metal, all the years he has spent hammering, bending, starting over.
And then the answer arrives.
Not like a voice.
Like something that had always been there.
Do not waste your warmth on those who only know how to cool the air around you.
Your temper is not measured by the blows you receive.
It is measured by what you are still able to protect when the fire seems extinguished.
The cat withdraws its paw.
It stays for another moment.
Then it turns and disappears beyond the threshold.
The cold remains in the forge.
The blacksmith listens to it.
And, for the first time in years, he does not try to fight it.
